Industrial compressors provide reliable support for heavy operations. Compressed air is used extensively by many industries and requires a consistent flow of non-heat-producing power.
What Is An Industrial Compressor?
An industrial compressor is an apparatus used to reduce the volume of a gas or liquid, increasing its pressure. The oil, chemical, and gas industries utilize these devices to move compressible fluids reliably. You’ll find them at field nodes, the processing plant, and pipeline inlets for gas well boosting, vapor recovery, and casing gas.
Industrial Compressor Basics
Atmospheric air is stored under pressure inside a tank within the industrial compressor, creating potential energy. When this pressurized air is released, the potential energy becomes kinetic, enabling it to accomplish tasks.
Types of Industrial Compressors
There are two main types of industrial compressors.
Positive displacement compressors
Positive displacement compressors draw air into compression chambers. The chambers are then closed. The chamber volume decreases until the desired pressure ratio is achieved. Then the valve opens, discharging the compressed air into an outlet system. Reciprocating compressors are the most utilized positive displacement compressors. They can manage any pressures and volume capacities. Single-stage reciprocating compressors draw air into the cylinder, compressing it with a single stroke, then transferring pressurized air into a storage tank. Two-stage reciprocating compressors utilize an extra piston to create higher levels of pressure.
Rotary compressors
Rotary compressors are positive displacement devices in which displacement and compression are affected by the positive action of rotating parts. Rotary vane compressors utilize rotating blades called vanes to compress gas or air. The shape and size of the vanes determine how high the pressure becomes. Multiple vanes are combined to produce complex compressors of many sizes. Screw compressors are positive displacement devices that have several working phases, including suction, compression, and discharge. A compressor casing contains rotating helical screws, with discharge nozzles and a gas inlet at opposite ends.
Where Are Industrial Compressors Used?
Many industries utilize industrial compressors, including aerospace, agriculture, construction, energy sector, food and beverage, mining, pharmaceuticals, textiles, transportation, and woodworking.
Industrial Compressor Maintenance
There are techniques to avoid industrial compressor problems and increase the lifespan of your equipment.
- Follow the manufacturer’s specifications: Always use compatible parts that meet specifications.
- Seek the help of professionals: When purchasing an industrial compressor, consult with industry professionals and peers. They’ll provide information on how well the machine works for your industry.
- Schedule regular maintenance: Undertake daily, monthly, and yearly maintenance procedures/practices. Utilize the services of a reputable company with qualified technicians.
